Students at Springlake-Earth participate in four Journalism contests in this University Intersholastic League event: news, editorial, feature, and headline writing. Journalism stresses critical thinking and basic communication skills. Feature writing is a one-hour contest, while the other three are 45-minute contests. Test material in the news writing contest consists of a fact sheet from which participants develop an article. In editorial writing, contestants are given a fact sheet and must develop an editorial. In feature writing, contestants are given information sheets from which they are expected to develop interesting stories. In headline writing participants read six short articles and write prescribed headlines for each.
