The slogan on the 2001 UIL Academic State Meet t-shirt was "The Brain is the Ultimate Muscle," and on Friday, May 4, the S-E Math Team put their "muscles" to the test. Team members Jeff, Russell, and Haylee, have been working since January in preparation for this year's competitions. At the state meet, in class 1-A, these "mathletes" placed third as a team. Individually, out of 19 class 1-A contestants, Jeff placed 7th, Russell placed 10th, and Haylee placed 14th.
The trip to the state meet was the last event in the team's very successful year. Individually, at the district UIL meet on March 27, Jeff placed 1st and Russell placed 2nd. Jeff and Russell, along with Haylee and alternate team member Clay, ranked as the first team. At the regional academic meet, Jeff placed 2nd. The team of Jeff, Russell, and Haylee placed first at the Regional academic meet in Levelland on April 20 and thereby earned the right to compete at this year's UIL Academic State Meet in Austin.
