The Springlake-Earth Cross-Examination debate team, consisting of Clay and Matthew, competed at the 2001 UIL Cross-Examination State Debate Meet in Austin, Texas. There were 56 teams that competed at the state level in class 1A. Of the 56 teams, the Springlake-Earth team won 3rd place. They competed against teams from all across the state before they eventually lost on a 2-1 decision in the semi-finals against the eventual state champion, Whitharral. The boys were honored for advancing to the state four years in a row.
