In the third, fourth, and fifth grades, we use the Accelerated Reading Program as part of our overall reading program. A student reads books at his or her level. He/she can then take tests. If the test is passed, the student is awarded points. The number of points awarded depends on the length and reading level of the book. The whole point of the Accelerated Reading program is for the student to practice reading and to understand what is read. The more we practice, the better we become! This practice carries over into other subjects, such as social studies, health, language, and--yes--even math (we have to read those pesky math problems).
